What is a High-Risk Termination?
Truth be told, it can be any termination that the employer believes may be dangerous or pose a threat to other employees or the facility/ company itself. In most cases these terminations are for cause and involve a single individual but a simple reduction in force (RIF) lay-off situation can not be excluded from the possible threat. How does an employer decide that a particular situation warrants a High-Risk Termination approach? There are a number of factors that will stack the deck in favor of a High-Risk Termination approach. They can include a past history of violent acts, verbal threats, threats made by electronic means, statements made to co-workers, intentional acts of company sabotage and social media posts, just to name a few. What can be done to reduce the risk? When it comes to High-Risk Terminations, we wrote the book on this! In fact, High Risk Terminations have been the catalyst of so many acts of workplace violence and workplace active shooter events, that it was the main motivator behind the creation of the Workplace Violence Mitigation (WVM) © solution and brand that you see before you! First of all, understand that there is no absolute solution to this problem. There are however ways to greatly reduce the risk or “Mitigate” it. Anyone that tells you they have an absolute resolution is simply not telling you the truth. The mitigation process begins long before a violent incident unfolds, otherwise your plan is simply LUCK.
